EDGAR Next: What It Is and What Filers Need to Do in 2025

Last Updated: 4/3/25

The SEC’s EDGAR system is undergoing a major update, and if your company submits filings, you'll need to take action to maintain access.

The new system, called EDGAR Next, introduces structural and security changes that will affect every filer. In this post, we’ll explain what EDGAR Next is, who it impacts, what’s changing, and—most importantly—what you need to do before the SEC’s 2025 deadline.

What Is EDGAR Next?

EDGAR Next is the SEC’s modernization initiative for its EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval) system. It’s designed to improve security, transparency, and account management by replacing legacy access processes and introducing more modern, identity-based login requirements.

The SEC began rolling out EDGAR Next in 2024. Full implementation is scheduled for 2025. Every filer must enroll in the new system and transition to Login.gov-based authentication to maintain EDGAR access.

Who Is Affected?

Every filer that submits to EDGAR will be impacted.

This includes:

  • Public companies

  • Investment advisers and private funds

  • Law firms, compliance consultants, and filing agents

  • Individuals submitting ownership filings, Form 144s, and other forms

Whether you file directly or through a service provider like ACN Solutions, you must enroll in EDGAR Next to continue using the SEC’s system.

What’s Changing?

Login.gov Integration

All EDGAR users will access the system using Login.gov accounts with multifactor authentication. This replaces the current filer password, PMAC, and passphrase for dashboard access.
The CCC (CIK Confirmation Code) will still be used when submitting filings.

Individual Credentials and Account Administrators

Each filer must designate two individual Account Administrators, unless the filer is an individual or qualifies as a single-member entity. Account Administrators are responsible for managing the filer’s EDGAR access, permissions, and user group settings. These individuals will log in using their own Login.gov credentials.

Annual Account Confirmation

Each filer must select a confirmation quarter and, once a year, confirm that their EDGAR account details are accurate. This includes confirming user access, contact information, and account structure.

Delegated Entity Authorization

Filers may authorize trusted third-party providers, such as filing agents, as Delegated Entities. This enables outside firms to submit filings on the filer’s behalf without relying on shared credentials.

Key Deadlines

  • March 24, 2025 – Enrollment opens

  • September 12, 2025 – Deadline to enroll

  • After September 12, 2025, filers who have not enrolled will lose access to EDGAR and be unable to submit filings

What You Need to Do

If you’re enrolling your organization yourself, here’s what the SEC requires:

  1. Create Login.gov accounts for Account Administrators (two are required unless the filer is an individual or a single-member entity)

  2. Locate and confirm EDGAR credentials (CIK, CCC, and passphrase)

  3. Complete the EDGAR Next enrollment process through the new dashboard

  4. Select an annual account confirmation quarter

  5. Designate Delegated Entities if applicable
